Event Wrap: Sport + Waterways + A Ripple Effect..

It was amazing to hear and feel collaborative mindsets, enthusiasm, realism, vision and excitement move through the room as we discussed;

  • the impact of climate change, pollution and nature loss on sport and the negative contribution by sport. As Maddy pointed out 'sport is the victim and the villian'

  • global policy to which sport is responding from an international to a local level and how Regen Mebourne and Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo (Yarra Strategic Plan) are responding in Melbourne and Victoria

  • the connection sports have to waterways, realizing that we play across every landscape on the planet and each of these landscapes is in a water catchment.

  • visions without barriers, activities with benefits for us and the river and leverage points to unlock the potential to accelerate more people, more often and in more places to value and and act for the river from its source to the sea

  • our commitment, our one thing for the Birrarung, to take away.

Maddy Orr gave us all so much to think about - her interview about her book Warming Up, How Climate Change is Changing Sport was insightful. How lucky were we all to be the first Australian audience to hear from Maddy about her research, observations and visions for the future.

It was great to find out more about the Greenline from Jackie Song, we are grateful to the Greenline Project Hub for hosting us. What a magnificent space to learn and explore our ideas, right on the banks of the Birrarung.

Remember, Riverfest is still in full flow. Events will be running throughout September and culminating in a celebration at Federation Square on the 22nd, World Rivers Day. You can see what else is on by visiting the  Riverfest website

We are keen to continue the conversation around the role of sports in nature and collaborative action we can collectively take as a sector.

We will be synthesizing the outcomes of the interactive workshops and collating this into a short report which we will share with those who registered in the next couple of weeks. The report will form the basis of the activities we can start working together on in the short, medium and long term. We will also be arranging frequent forums to focus on progressing these actions with our event participants.

If you are interested and were not able to attend or register please reach out to discuss being part of these collaborations - we would love to have more of the sports and regeneration communities join us.

We will let you know when the first drop in session is to further talk about outcomes from the event, ways we can work together or anything sports + nature.

Please reach out to Charity Mosienyane, Lead Convenor Swimmable Birrarung charity@regen.melbourne or myself via the details below out if you have any questions or would like to discuss the workshop and future steps.

See you soon.
